Economic Impact Payment information: what you need to know

On March 27, 2020, Congress passed the CARES Act to help individuals that are negatively impacted by the coronavirus epidemic. Economic Impact Payments, an important component of individual relief, are being distributed by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Millions of Americans have already received their Economic Impact Payments. While the IRS continues to calculate and automatically send the payments to most eligible individuals, some may have to provide additional information to get their payments.

The New York State Tax Department recognizes the importance of the Economic Impact Payments for New Yorkers in this time of need. This information is being provided to help answer common questions about how these payments are being distributed. Please help us get the word out—share with family and friends who may be isolated due to COVID-19.

Is it too late to receive a payment?

You may still be able to receive a payment in 2021. Visit the IRS at Recovery Rebate Credit for more information.

Where can I find information?

The Economic Impact Payment program is managed by the IRS and the United States Treasury. For accurate guidance, including how to provide or update direct deposit information, filing directions for those who have not filed a return, or to check the status of your payment, visit the IRS at Economic Impact Payments.

Do I need to file a New York State personal income tax form to receive the Economic Impact Payment?

No. A New York State tax return has no impact on eligibility for the payment.

How can I verify information about Economic Impact Payments or offers of assistance?

Rely on trusted sites and remember, the government will never call to ask for your Social Security number, bank account, or credit card number.
