Requesting an automatic six-month extension of time to file

File an extension and pay any tax due by mail using Form IT-370, Application for Automatic Six-Month Extension of Time to File for Individuals. Make sure you mail your extension to the correct mailing address shown in the instructions.

If you do not have any tax balance due, you may send a copy of your federal extension Form 4868, Application for Extension to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return on or before April 15, 2009 to:

Attach another copy to your return when you file it. Write “New York State copy” on the top of the form.
